2 Bastrop Co first responders hospitalized after suspected DUI incident

BASTROP, TX – Two first responders investigating an accident in Bastrop County were hurt by a supposedly intoxicated driver on Thursday, according to KXAN.

The accident occurred in the 600 block of W State Highway 71 as Bastrop Fire Assistant Chief Eric DeArmitt and Bastrop Police Sgt. Charles Sanford were responding to a collision.

The driver of a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, 53-year-old Kenneth Crawford, went near the crash scene, reversed his vehicle, then struck a first responder’s vehicle.

He went into forward, then collided with DeArmitt. As Sanford was trying to reach through the window to grab the steering wheel, he was dragged for about 150 feet.

DeArmitt was taken to the hospital with severe injuries that will reportedly require extensive treatment.

Sanford sustained minor wounds in the crash and was released from the hospital after treatment.

Crawford was taken into police custody on charges of felony intoxication assault with serious injury to emergency crews. He will likely be facing additional charges, as well.
