TRAFFIC ALERT: Austin police advise drivers to avoid I-35 and downtown area

AUSTIN, TX – Police are advising drivers to avoid the area of Interstate 35 and the downtown Austin area today due to a protest that has spilled onto the roadway, according to KXAN.

The roads have been shut down, and police are aiding with detours as necessary.  US Highway 290 East is also being affected, according to the report.

While official organizers of the event canceled the demonstration against police brutality, protesters still have gathered downtown today.

The demonstrations are in response to the killing of George Floyd while in police custody and were initially organized by the Austin Justice Coalition. The organization canceled the event, however, when it decided it couldn’t guarantee the safety of demonstrators.
