Update: More details emerge in fatal pedestrian crash on Ben White
AUSTIN, TX – The pedestrian killed on E Ben White Boulevard yesterday was attempting to direct traffic away from a pickup truck that had spilled mulch onto the roadway, Fox 7 reports.
The victim was part of a work crew that was riding in the pickup truck, which was also hauling a load of mulch. Some of that mulch spilled off the truck as it approached Highway 71 on E Ben White, prompting the driver to stop the vehicle so that the crew could retrieve the mulch.
Two vehicles apparently collided as they attempted to avoid the crew in the roadway. The force of that collision pushed one of the vehicles into a crew member, fatally injuring him. That individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Austin Police Sgt. Earl Garrison said that the workers should have contacted authorities rather than try to clean the spill up themselves.
