Cyclist hit, killed by 18-wheeler on Fuqua St in SE Houston
HOUSTON, TX — A 56-year-old man died last Friday afternoon, July 28, after being struck by a tractor-trailer while riding a bicycle in southeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.
The fatal incident took place in front of the Shell gas station located at 11001 Fuqua Street, in the city’s Southbelt/Ellington neighborhood. It was first reported at about 4:25 p.m.
Investigators say a white Freightliner tractor-truck with an attached trailer was behind a store and pulling out of the parking lot onto Sabo Road. The driver of the Freightliner told authorities he did not see the bicyclist, who tried to cross the road in the truck’s path. As the 18-wheeler continued into the street, it hit the cyclist.
Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
The driver, who was determined to be unimpaired at the time of the crash, cooperated with officers and was released.
An investigation by the HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division remains ongoing.
