Man hit, killed by van after exiting stalled car on I-10 in west Houston
HOUSTON, TX — A 50-year-old man died Saturday, June 17, after being struck by a van while standing outside a stalled car on Interstate 10 in west Houston, reports the Houston Police Department.
The fatal incident occurred in the 7700 block of I-10 (Katy Freeway) at around 7:35 a.m.
According to the HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, a 37-year-old man was driving a black Mitsubishi Mirage eastbound on I-10 when he stopped the car in a moving travel lane due to a flat tire. The victim, who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi, had gotten out of the vehicle to inspect the tire when he and the Mitsubishi were hit by a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van heading eastbound. The impact of the crash caused the Mitsubishi to strike a blue Nissan Murano.
Shortly after Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene, the male passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, who suffered injuries considered non-life-threatening, was transported to an area hospital.
Authorities said the driver of the Mercedes, a 21-year-old man, remained at the scene following the crash. He cooperated with investigators and then was released from the scene.
An investigation remains ongoing, but impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor, and no charges have been filed as of this writing.
