UPDATE: Man charged with murder after fatal pedestrian crash in Deer Park

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A 55-year-old man has been charged with murder following a pedestrian crash last Tuesday in Deer Park that ultimately claimed a teenager’s life, reports ABC13.

First responders rushed to the scene in the 2100 block of Georgia Avenue, near Wildwood Drive, shortly after 3:30 p.m. on November 14.

A preliminary investigation indicates Leland Smith’s vehicle swerved onto a sidewalk where it struck a 17-year-old student, who was walking home from Deer Park High School’s south campus.

Officials confirmed the victim’s death on Friday morning, after her family decided to remove her from life support.

Smith was originally charged with intoxication manslaughter following the incident. He has since been transferred to Harris County Jail. Currently held on a $100,000 bond, he is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday, November 27.
