Work truck strikes HSCO deputy, 2 others at East Fwy crash scene
HARRIS COUNTY, TX — An HCSO deputy and two other people were hospitalized Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle on the East Freeway in east Houston, reports ABC13.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the deputy, 38, was using her patrol vehicle to protect the scene of a minor two-vehicle crash in the 16400 block of the freeway (Interstate 10) near Baytown.
At around 6:38 a.m., while standing with the male drivers on the shoulder, she and the two men were struck by a work truck after it crashed into the patrol car and entered the scene. The truck, which was hauling a bobcat on a gooseneck trailer, appeared to have come off an overpass and to have been traveling at a slightly downhill tilt just before the crash.
The deputy and one of the male pedestrians were transported via ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. While the deputy was listed in serious but fair condition, her injuries include at least one broken bone and a number of other leg injuries. Authorities noted that she had been dragged about 75 to 100 feet during the crash.
The other patient brought to the hospital suffered more serious injuries impacting the chest down, which include a number of broken bones. Both victims are expected to survive, though the man may require a longer recovery time.
The other male pedestrian, who was transported to another area hospital, was listed in good condition and is also expected to survive.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor and no charges have been reported as of this writing, but an investigation remains underway.
