DUI suspect charged after double-fatal crash in Denver Harbor/Port Houston area
HOUSTON, TX — A 27-year-old man has been charged following a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in northeast Houston that claimed the lives of two people and injured a juvenile, reports the Houston Police Department.
The HPD Vehicular Crimes Division said the fatal wreck occurred at 7000 Waxahachie Street near Boyles Street, in the city’s Denver Harbor/Port Houston neighborhood. It was first reported at about 6:05 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates a man, a woman, and a 12-year-old child were traveling in a black Nissan Altima going northbound on Boyles Street. At one point, the suspect, who was driving a white Honda Pilot eastbound on Waxahachie Street, veered out of his lane. The Honda then hit and broke a wooden light pole on the street’s south side but continued traveling eastbound. Moments after the suspect failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Boyles, the Honda hit the Nissan. The Nissan was sent into a metal fence at the front of a home, and the Honda continued on until it hit a second light pole and a stop sign before rotating.
Houston Fire Department officials said the Nissan’s two adult occupants, a 46-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The vehicle’s juvenile passenger was transported to an area hospital where they were listed in stable condition.
HFD paramedics also took the Honda driver, a 27-year-old Saul Eduardo Claros, to a local hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening. He was found to have been impaired during the crash and has since been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter in the 183rd State District Court.
