2 on moped die after hit-and-run crash on I-45 in SE Houston

HOUSTON, TX — A man and a woman died early Wednesday after their moped collided with a vehicle that fled the scene on Interstate 45 in southeast Houston, reports ABC13.

The fatal incident occurred on the outbound lanes of I-45 (Gulf Freeway) near Cullen Boulevard, shortly after 12:00 a.m.

According to Houston Police, the man and woman were seen riding a moped that was traveling southbound in the 4000 block of the freeway. At one point, the moped was hit by an unknown vehicle, sending both riders onto the roadway. The striking driver continued southbound without stopping to render aid.

Authorities said because the initial crash happened over a hill crest, other drivers were unable to see the fallen riders in time. Both victims were hit multiple times as a result.

Multiple other drivers who struck the victims after the initial crash stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

At this time, investigators are working to locate possible video footage and analyze vehicle debris to identify the fleeing vehicle.
