Car crash causes pipeline fire on Spencer Hwy in La Porte
LA PORTE, TX – According to KHOU, the pipeline fire that forced nearby residents to evacuate the area was caused by a car crash near Spencer Hwy and East Blvd on Monday morning.
The driver of a white SUV plowed through a fence in Walmart’s parking lot and struck an above-ground valve around 10 a.m. The wreck ignited the gas in the pipeline and caused the fire.
Officials determined in a preliminary investigation that no terrorist activity caused the incident. They said that it was an isolated incident. Investigators are working to identify the driver.
Energy Transfer owns the pipeline. They turned off the gas flow to the damaged line and are waiting for the rest of the natural gas to burn off.
Four people were injured in the fire. Paramedics transported two of them to local hospitals.
The blaze closed roads and forced some residents to leave their homes. The heat caused by the inferno damaged multiple homes and a nearby park.
