DUI suspect arrested after fatal crash on West Rd in NW Houston

HOUSTON, TX — One person died early last Thursday, June 29, after a two-vehicle wreck in the Westbank neighborhood of northwest Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision took place in the 7800 block of West Road, shortly before 2:00 a.m.

A preliminary investigation shows a 2010 black Honda Accord was heading westbound in lane 2 at the same time a 2015 white Kia Optima was traveling eastbound in lane 2, at a high rate of speed. Authorities said the Kia Optima hit the Honda Accord from the back, fatally injuring the driver of the Honda, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

First responders transported the driver of the Kia Optima to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest Hospital with unspecified injuries. The Kia driver, who was administered a Drug Recognition Expert Evaluation, admitted to smoking a crack rock before the crash occurred. After their release from the hospital, the suspect was arrested for Intoxication Manslaughter.

At this time, the HCSO’s Vehicular Crimes Division continues to investigate the case.
