Man fatally hit by vehicle while running across I-610 in NW Houston

HOUSTON, TX — A 25-year-old man died early Sunday after a pedestrian crash on Interstate 610 in northwest Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

The fatal incident was reported at 1111 West Loop North (West I-610 North), in an area north of the I-10 interchange, at around 1:35 a.m.

A preliminary investigation shows Tyriq Mosley Smith was traveling in a blue Nissan Sentra heading southbound when he got into an argument with the driver. After asking for the car to be pulled over, the driver stopped in the freeway’s right shoulder. Mosley Smith then exited the car and started running across the interstate. Moments later, he was hit by a gray Mercedes Benz E400 traveling southbound.

Mosley Smith was pronounced deceased on the scene by paramedics.

Authorities said both drivers stayed at the crash site and cooperated with officials. Following an evaluation, the driver of the Nissan, 19-year-old Chrishaun Dontez Johnson was taken into custody and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in Harris County Criminal Court #14.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 45-year-old man, was not suspected impairment. First responders had him transported to a local hospital for injuries considered non-life-threatening.
