Pipeline explodes, causes evacuations in La Porte, Deer Park
LA PORTE, TX – According to AP News, a pipeline explosion and fire near Spencer Hwy and Canada forced residents to evacuate the area on Monday.
The explosion occurred around 9:55 a.m. First responders evacuated the neighborhood surrounding the incident. Several homes caught fire, and students in nearby schools were told to shelter in place.
Firefighters fought multiple housefires near the pipeline. The fire had also damaged a nearby park. Several businesses are close to the fire. It is unclear if any of them have been damaged.
La Porte city officials do not know what flows through the pipeline or how it will be shut down.
The cause of the fire is unknown. It is also unclear what company operates the pipeline.
Thousands of customers are without power due to damaged high-voltage power lines caused by the fire. CenterPoint Energy is monitoring the fire. They are cooperating with first responders and will assess the damage and restore service to customers once it is safe to do so.
