Rodeo cowboy killed in multiple-vehicle accident

LAKE SOMERVILLE, TX – According to ABC 13, a popular rodeo cowboy from Houston was killed in a multiple-vehicle accident near Somerville last Saturday.

Justin Richard, 37, was one of the four victims killed in the crash.

Authorities say that Ignacio Aviles, 37, was driving south in his F-250 on LBJ Drive when he went off the right side of the road, hit the guardrail, and caromed into the northbound lanes.

Aviles struck a 2001 Chevy Suburban that was occupied by Richard, 18-year-old Chase Sowders, 18-year-old Jasmine Maxwell, and 6-year-old Payton Francis at around 11:05 p.m. All four people died in the accident.

Aviles suffered life threatening injuries and was airlifted to CHI St. Joseph Health in Bryan.

DPS said investigators are still determining whether speed or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
