Teen dead, 2 others left injured after car-splitting crash off I-45 in League City

GALVESTON COUNTY, TX — A 17-year-old died early Tuesday after a single-car crash off Interstate 45 in League City that left two other teenagers injured, one critically, reports ABC13.

The fatal accident took place in the 1100 block of the northbound I-45 (Gulf Freeway) feeder road. League City Police arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a dispatch at about 4:35 a.m.

According to a witness, the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and was cutting in and out of traffic when its driver lost control. After the vehicle veered off the roadway, it collided with a power pole and then a light pole, which halved the car.

Footage captured at the scene indicates the car’s front end came to rest about 75 feet apart from its back end.

Officers arrived to find two of the vehicle’s occupants ejected, and the third victim was found in the back seat. All three patients were rushed to an area hospital, where the 17-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries.

League City Police said the vehicle’s front-seat passenger, 18, remains listed in critical condition. The backseat passenger, 16, was last listed in non-critical condition.

An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
