Teen driver dies after car crashes, explodes off FM 1488 in The Woodlands

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — An 18-year-old man died late Monday after a major crash that set fire to a stretch of woods in The Woodlands, according to ABC13.

Montgomery County deputies said the fatal accident occurred in the area of Farm to Market 1488 Road and College Park Drive, in the city’s northwest corner, shortly before 12:00 a.m.

A preliminary investigation found that the young man was driving a Mercedes at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle. Authorities said the car collided with a utility pole and exploded into flames.

The victim was pronounced deceased, confirmed officials.

Crews with the Woodlands and Needham Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the surrounding wooded area. Deputies noted that the flames reached up to the treetops, about 60 feet up off the ground.
