UPDATE: Suspect arrested, charged in connection to hit-and-run death of USPS worker

HOUSTON, TX — A 43-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged role in a north Houston hit-and-run crash Saturday, September 30, that fatally injured a USPS worker, according to Click2Houston.

Houston Police Department officials said the incident occurred in the 8100 block of Bauman Road, at the Julia Street intersection. Officers were dispatched to the area at about 3:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect, Jesus Natividad Gutierrez, was behind the wheel of a white Ford Expedition when tried to get around a United States Postal Service truck ahead of him. As the mail truck began turning left onto Julia Street, the Expedition collided with the truck’s back left side, causing the truck to spin and overturn.

The driver of the USPS truck, 29-year-old Robert Jones, was ejected out of the vehicle and into a nearby ditch with the truck on top of him.

Despite efforts by witnesses to stop the Expedition, the striking vehicle fled the scene.

Many of the same witnesses worked to administer aid to Jones, but the victim died from his injuries while in transit to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

On Tuesday, October 3, the HPD announced they had arrested Gutierrez in connection to the crash. Charges against him include the second-degree felony of failure to stop and render aid – involving death, and “filing a false police report in Harris County Criminal Court.”
