Worker injured in major fire at Shepherd chemical plant
SAN JACINTO COUNTY, TX — A chemical fire Wednesday morning at the Sound Resource Solutions plant in Shepherd left an employee injured and prompted a shelter-in-place order, reports Click2Houston.
Twenty fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 731 Farm to Market Road 1127, near U.S. Highway 59, shortly after an eruption of flames at about 8:30 a.m.
An investigation remains in progress, but Jeff Harfield, the president of Sound Resource Solutions, which conducts industrial chemical manufacturing and works with flammable materials, said a forklift incident was the root cause of the blaze.
The San Jacinto County Office of Emergency Management confirmed that an employee who was involved in that incident suffered injuries. He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and was expected to be released in the afternoon. No other injuries were immediately reported.
Though no chemicals were detected in air monitoring performed in the area, residents within a mile radius of the plant were asked to shelter inside.
Those wanting to leave the area were instructed to travel to the end of FM 1127 and take Watson Road to Trinity River Ranch, where a detour was established. Motorists were told that they would not be able to immediately return after leaving. Part of US-59 near FM 1127 was closed, creating a traffic backup into Montgomery County.
As of this writing, local officials have not announced a clearance time.
