Wrong-way driver left critically hurt after crash with semi on US-290 in NW Houston
HOUSTON, TX — A woman was critically injured early Friday when her car was hit by a semi-truck and fell 18 feet off a US-290 ramp in northwest Houston, reports ABC13.
The accident occurred on the ramp connecting U.S Highway 290 inbound to North Loop Freeway (Interstate 610). It was first reported at around 1:38 a.m.
Details are limited, but the Houston Police Department said the female driver had likely come from the downtown area when she got on the freeway from the wrong direction. At one point, she stopped her car on a moving lane on the ramp. Shortly after, an 18-wheeler collided with the car, causing it to fall off the ramp and onto a grassy median 18 feet below.
First responders worked to extricate the woman from the wreckage. Officials said the victim was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.
No injuries to the driver of the semi were reported.
HPD detectives said the semi driver did not display signs of intoxication. An investigation remains underway to determine whether or not the victim was impaired.
