Teen cyclist hit, killed by car near Betty Sue Creech Elementary in Katy
FORT BEND COUNTY, TX — A 14-year-old boy died Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in southeast Katy, according to ABC13.
The Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office said the fatal incident occurred at Mason Road and Cinco Park Road, near Betty Sue Creech Elementary School. First responders were called to the area shortly after 7:35 a.m.
An early investigation found that the teen was biking toward Cinco Ranch High School when he entered the crosswalk. Shortly after, he was hit by a vehicle driven by a man believed to be in his early 20s.
Two bystanders attempted to administer aid and CPR to the cyclist, but he died as a result of his injuries.
The male driver, who remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators. Authorities said he may face charges under the Lisa Torry Smith Act, also known as the Crosswalk Law, which was signed into law by Governor Abbott on June 18, 2021, and requires drivers to “stop and yield to the right of way to pedestrians lawfully in the intersection or an adjacent crosswalk.”
It’s unclear how fast the driver was traveling at the time of the wreck, but ABC13 noted that the crash site is within the elementary school’s 20mph zone.
