Cyclist dies after being hit by pickup truck on Fondren Rd in SW Houston

HOUSTON, TX — A 53-year-old man was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon when he was hit by a vehicle while riding a bike in southwest Houston, reports the Houston Police Department.

The incident took place in the 13800 block of Fondren Road at West Orem Drive, at around 2:35 p.m.

According to the HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, the victim was traveling northbound on the sidewalk along Fondren Road. At one point, a black Ford F-250 pickup truck left a private driveway and waited at a red light at the West Orem Drive intersection, facing eastbound.

Authorities said the driver then turned right onto Fondren Road at the same time that the cyclist had begun turning right onto West Orem. Shortly after, the pickup collided with the man on the bike.

Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department rushed the cyclist to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The HPD said the driver, who stayed behind, was not suspected of driving while intoxicated. They were released from the scene after cooperating with an investigation, which remains ongoing.
