Judge sentences man for crash that injured Sugar Land police officer on US 59
SUGAR LAND, TX – A judge sentenced a 27-year-old man to prison for a wreck that critically injured a Sugar Land police officer near US 59 and ALT US 90 on Mar. 20, 2022, according to Click 2 Houston.
Officer Ruben Munoz, 25, was working the scene of a single-vehicle crash and was using his patrol car to block traffic when Julian Requena slammed into his vehicle around 2 a.m.
Munoz was unconscious and pinned inside the vehicle. Two SLPD officers saw the wreck. They and two bystanders extricated Munoz from the car and took him to the HOV lane. The officers performed life-saving measures on Munoz until paramedics arrived.
Authorities determined Requena was impaired during the wreck and charged him with two counts of intoxication assault.
Munoz had multiple surgeries and is back on the force.
Judge Surendran Pattel sentenced Requena to 10 years in prison.
