Wheel from semi hits, kills construction worker in Channelview
CHANNELVIEW, TX – One man died, and another was hurt Thursday when a wheel from a semi-truck fell into a construction zone in southeast Harris County.
According to KHOU 11, the incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. just north of the East Freeway, or I-10, in a construction area on Monmouth Street. This is east of Lake Sandy in the city of Channelview, which is about 16 miles east of Houston.
Police say that a wheel from a westbound 18-wheeler became detached, landed in a work zone, and struck three construction workers.
Medics transported one of the workers, identified as Israel Medellin, to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Another worker, identified as Jose Bonilla, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The third worker did not require hospitalization.
No charges have been announced thus far.
