1 charged, 2 killed in rear-end crash at I-10EB, Taylor St
HOUSTON, TX – A collision caused by a drunk driver killed two people early Friday along the freeway in central Houston, reports KHOU 11.
The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-10, or the Katy Freeway, near Taylor Street. This is just south of Stude Park and west of I-45.
Police say that an eastbound Tesla was travelling at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a Nissan. The impact of the crash caused the Nissan to ignite.
Both the driver and the passenger in the Nissan died at the scene. Authorities identified them as Christian Rangel and Bianca Romero, 22.
Authorities arrested the driver of the Tesla at the scene, charging him with intoxication manslaughter.
Officials closed the freeway for just over five hours Friday morning while emergency crews worked at the scene.
A full investigation is underway.
