One-year-old killed in Houston apartment parking lot accident

HOUSTON, TX – A one-year-old child died in a parking lot crash Friday night at a Houston apartment complex, reports FOX 26 Houston.

Reports indicate that the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Reserve at Westwood. Police say the child’s family had been preparing to leave the complex near Forum Park Drive and Bissonnet Street.

Investigators say the toddler got away from his mother and darted into the parking area. At the same time, a security guard was driving through the property during a patrol.

Police say the security guard’s vehicle then struck the child. The guard stopped after noticing the impact and exited the vehicle to assist.

The child’s father and the guard both contacted 911. While waiting for help, they also attempted to take the toddler for emergency care.

First responders arrived before they could leave the complex. Crews treated the child and then transported him to a hospital. The child later died of his injuries.

Police say the guard stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials also report that they checked the guard for impairment and found no signs of intoxication. The guard is not currently facing charges.
