Gonzalez said officials believe a driver of a U-Haul truck fell asleep and veered into the opposite lanes of traffic. A woman driving a Jeep saw the oncoming truck and swerved out of her lane to try to avoid a crash, and ended up crashing into the ditch.
Unfortunately, the woman’s 2-year-old toddler died from their injuries. The woman, her other passenger, an 8-month-old baby, and the U-Haul driver survived.
EMS crews transported the three surviving aforementioned occupants to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Officials did not confirm if the baby and the woman had a family connection.
