Driver dies after fiery crash on North Freeway in Greater Greenspoint
HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A man died Friday, December 22, on the North Freeway in northwest Houston after a rear-end crash caused his car to catch fire, reports the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the accident took place in the 14800 block of the freeway, in the city’s Greater Greenspoint area, at around 9:13 p.m.
An early investigation indicates that the northbound 1996 Ford Crown Victoria the victim was driving had a flat tire, causing the vehicle to travel at a low speed in the far left lane. At one point, the slow-moving Ford was hit from the back by a 2004 Honda CR-V, also traveling northbound. The impact of the crash caused the Ford to spin counter-clockwise. As the Ford rotated, it emitted sparks which ignited the vehicle’s fuel system, causing the vehicle to become engulfed in flames.
First responders arrived on the scene to find the male driver, who was trapped in the burning vehicle, with no signs of life. At the time of the HPD press release, the Medical Examiner’s Office was working to identity the victim.
The HCSO’s Vehicular Crimes Division continues to investigate.
