Suspected DWI crash injures HPD officer, 2 others on Katy Freeway

HOUSTON, TX – Three people, including an HPD officer, were hurt Sunday in a crash along Katy Freeway near Beltway 8, reports ABC13.

Houston police say the wreck happened at around 2:50 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Katy Freeway.

Prior to the collision, an officer and a tow truck operator had stopped to help a stranded woman. Police say the woman needed fuel and had four children with her in the vehicle.

As the officer and the tow truck driver assisted the woman, a blue Honda Accord reportedly crashed into the patrol vehicle. The impact injured the officer, the tow operator, and the woman.

Officials say the woman sustained a serious leg injury. The officer and tow operator reportedly had minor injuries. Medics transported all three adults to a nearby hospital for treatment.

There were no reported injuries to the four children in the vehicle. Authorities say relatives came to pick them up after the crash.

Police arrested the Honda driver on suspicion of DWI.

Crews closed all westbound main lanes of Katy Freeway in the aftermath of the crash but reopened them just before 7 a.m.
