Truck driver ID’d, charged in crash that killed Montgomery Co. deputy
CONROE, TX – A truck driver who was involved in a crash that killed a Montgomery County deputy in late June has been identified and will face charges.
This is an update in connection with our previous reporting. ABC13 said the truck driver was identified as 20-year-old Ian Perez. He is being charged with “passing certain vehicles in violation of bodily injury as a result of failing to slow down or move over while passing emergency vehicles,” according to the Montgomery County Sheriff s Office.
It’s believed that the truck debris then struck a male deputy, later identified as John Hernandez, who was hospitalized for injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
The Back Story
The incident began with an initial crash on Interstate 45 reported before 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 28. A deputy, identified as 24-year-old Erika Serrato, was helping to re-direct traffic after the initial crash when she was struck by Perez’s heavy-duty commercial truck.
Serrato, unfortunately, died from her injuries at the scene and leaves behind her partner, Karlie Mann.
Serrato was a Montgomery County deputy for six years, and a funeral procession was scheduled in her honor for Tuesday, July 7, according to additional information from ABC13.
The driver who caused the initial crash was identified as 34-year-old Ashton Jammer. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be booked into the Montgomery County Jail.
