Man dies weeks after hit-and-run pedestrian crash in Mid West area

HOUSTON, TX — A 38-year-old man who was hospitalized after a hit-and-run pedestrian crash early this year in southwest Houston has died, according to the Houston Police Department.

The incident was reported at 3500 Hillcroft Street, in the city’s Mid West area, on January 2, at about 9:40 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim, Waswa Sula, was on foot and crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk. At one point, he was struck by a driver in a silver Toyota Corolla that then fled the scene.

Authorities were later able to locate the suspect, 25-year-old Gabriel Mejia Cor, and his vehicle shortly after. Mejia Cor was arrested and booked into Harris County Jail.

Sula, who was conscious and breathing during transport to an area hospital, was released from the facility on January 7. The HPD has learned that on January 13, Sula was rushed to a hospital after being found unresponsive on a sidewalk. He was pronounced deceased some time later.

At this time, the department has not disclosed whether Sula’s crash injuries directly resulted in his death. No information regarding updated charges has been shared.
